Learnerships and Skills

A Learnership is a structured learning programme for gaining theoretical knowledge and practical skills leading to a nationally recognized and registered National Qualification Framework (NQF) qualification. A Learnership Qualification comprises of the following three learning components which are rolled out over an average period of 18 months depending on the number of the credits of a specific qualification. These components are:

  • Core component: unit standard- based training directly related to the study fields; for an example; Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and numerous others.
  • Fundamental component: unit standard- based learning components in Mathematical literacy and Communication.
  • Elective component: unit standard- based learning components peripherally related to the core element or soft skills related to life orientation.

All these components are grouped in a three year curriculum referred to in terms of the first year; Level 2, the second year; Level 3 and the third year as Level 4. Each of these levels is an exit level.

A Learnership is an outcomes-based training system that allows for the certification of a candidate`s experience through the recognition of prior learning. All above components are articulates between compatible qualifications. A learnership programme steers the learner to success through the dedication of qualified and accredited Facilitators and Assessors using accredited facilities (workshops) and training material. Assessment methods ensure that individual needs are met and feedback reports lead to learner support and hands-on mentorship. A large part of the learnership includes practical workshop / workplace training that are logged (log book) as experience towards a trade. Upon the successful completion of a level, based on a quality assurance report from the internal and the external moderator, a national qualification is awarded by the relevant SETA.

WHO CAN APPLY AND HOW?

Learnerships are available to all young, unemployed and school leavers as well as to employees sponsored by companies supporting their employees to further their qualifications. In most cases companies will act as a host employer for groups sourced by themselves in a trade of their choice. An example could be a company in the motor industry supporting an Auto Repair and Maintenance learnership. For placement in a learnership, a prospective candidate will have to contact the Department of Labour/labour centre closer to candidate or should be on the look-out for learnership opportunities in the media.

Tshwane South College for FET serves as a SETA accredited training provider for various selected study fields (table below). If you need more information on these training fields, or information on career paths of your choice, you can call our office administrator at 012-380 5061.

CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS

If learners meet the entry requirements determined by the qualification as well as the selection criteria by their host employer a partnership contract will be signed between the relevant Seta, the host employer, Training provider (TSC) and the learner. The host employer is obliged to provide their learners a stipend for the duration of the programme as well as protective clothing.

SHORT SKILLS PACKAGES AVAILABLE AT TSHWANE SOUTH COLLEGE

A big advantage of training on unit standard- based courses is that it offers the opportunity to do accredited short skills courses by doing individual unit standards or to cluster unit standards together in a compatibly structured group. If a learner is successful in these courses, these unit standards will be portable to various future studies or qualifications. Interim statements of results will be issued to learners to enhance job opportunities whilst a full qualification certificate in each of the three levels will set the stage for a successful career path. The following table indicate some of the unit standards that can be individually selected or used in groups indicated below.
